245 What We Do We Do Now

- "Restless" The Cobras; last year I scored a pile of Essential CD box sets at a tag sale: three Elvis sets that cover his entire career (minus the movie soundtracks and gospel LPs); a fine BB King box set, and the Stax/Volt box. I am always on the lookout for funky instrumentals to open or close a playlist!
- "Bad Company" Bad Company has atmosphere to burn on this song. They were signed to Swan Song, the record label run by....
- Led Zeppelin "Gallows Pole"
- "Slippery People" I saw Talking Heads Stop Making Sense in the theater last month, and it continues to amaze me.
- "Back In Your Arms" Bruce Springsteen does soul ballads so rarely, this track, an outtake released on Tracks, is a rare gem.
- "This Is How It Goes" this Aimee Mann song has been running around my head for a month since I added it to this playlist.
- "Levon" Elton John; an example of an all-time classic that never needed a place on one of my playlist when I was a regular listener to classic rock radio.
- "Just Like Heaven" The Cure; I double- and triple-checked to see if over the last 33 years, I'd ever placed this song on one of my numbered playlists. But no. For so long, my playlists served to provide a soundtrack that listening to the radio could not provide. Only in the last few years have I fully embraced the idea that my love for classic rock staples is no longer fulfilled by listening to the radio. As a remedy, I am doing my best to backfill my new playlists with all-time favorites.
- "Do You Realize??" The Flaming Lips make their debut on one of my playlists, thanks to Rolling Stone's recent "Best Songs Of The Century" list.
- "War on War" Wilco
- "Boogie Chillen" John Lee Hooker; as recently heard while showing The Blues Brothers to my son.
- "Uncontrollable Urge" Devo
- "Janie Jones" The Clash
- "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" The Beatles
- "Tired Of Sleeping" Suzanne Vega
- "When She Loved Me" Sarah McLachlan
- "Heartbreak Beat" Psychedelic Furs
- "Southern Accents" I've recently discovered this Tom Petty song. First I heard Johnny Cash's cover, then Dolly Parton's version convinced me: this is an American standard that no one told me about before. The bridge sends it over the top.
- "Come Rain Or Come Shine" Ray Charles
- "stuck on it" eliora
- "Time To Move On" Tom Petty
- "Havalina" Pixies
