Five artists making their debut on one of my playlists here, six if you count Porter Wagoner duetting with Dolly Parton?
- Soccer Mommy "Driver"
- Radiohead "Subterranean Homesick Alien"
- The Beatles "Paperback Writer" (2022 stereo mix)
- Pearl Jam "Black" another 1990s classic that never made it onto a playlist. There are a ton of great songs that we all heard so much in the 1990s, that there was no need to feature them on a playlist. This is another one of those.
- Phil Collins "Inside Out" a album track that was never a single from No Jacket Required, but made the radio chart. I love the riff, but I like the saxophone interlude a lot less. I forgot all about that soft Adult Contemporary section in the middle.
- Sturgill Simpson "Mercury In Retrograde" an artist I've never listened to before. I find his singing style a little too country-mannered, and I don't have a lot of patience for "isn't being a star a pain" songs, but this one has a cool, ZZ Top-esque vibe.
- Saint Etienne "A Good Thing" I have only known of this group by reputation until I sampled their music this winter.
- Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby" Alison Krauss' cover with Jerry Douglas had a big impact on me thirty years ago; I found Dolly's cover with Porter Wagoner only recently while diving into her discography.
- Slow Pulp "Carina Phone 1000" yes, the acoustic guitar sounds like Dave Matthews' "Crash"!
- TLC "No Scrubs"
- Fountains Of Wayne "Mexican Wine" I love the oddball rhymes "explosion / ocean / lotion / motion" and "apartment / department / compartment / heart went", but mostly I like singing the harmonies on the chorus.
- Jackie DeShannon "When You Walk In The Room" DeShannon toured with The Beatles, and John Lennon loved the guitar riff on this single and showed off how he learned it for her.
- Tom Waits "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" another debut, except for Sarah McLachlan's cover of "Ol' 55"
- Stevie Wonder "You Haven't Done Nothin'"
- R.E.M. "Monty Got A Raw Deal"
- Harry Belafonte "Sweetheart From Venezuela" as heard briefly in Beetlejuice
- Fleetwood Mac "Oh Diane" I am mostly over Lindsey Buckingham, but I have patience for this one.
- Daryl Hall & John Oates "Missed Opportunity" I get the feeling that when H2O signed a new contract with Arista, after many years with RCA, they were pressured by Clive Davis to lean harder into their modern R&B sound. With this album they left behind any vestige of their rock/soul hybrid for full on Adult Contemporary/R&B pop.
- Annie Lennox "No More 'I Love You's"
- Bleachers "Tiny Moves" not to be confused with Bleached? I don't know how I found this artist, but I love this song!
- Siousxie & The Banshees "Kiss Them For Me"
