Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

Excellent movie, despite being hobbled by the inability to talk frankly about Brick's sexuality. The movie is so oblique about the topic, but I have to imagine 1958 audiences could read between the lines?
I'm undecided whether the broad portrayal of Mae Pollitt and her brood of bratty monsters is too comically awful, or appropriate. I think it's pretty ironic that Brick is married to the most beautiful woman in Hollywood (Liz Taylor), while Brick's brother Gooper is married to the comically ugly Mae (Madeleine Sherwood). Even an ordinary actress would be a stark contrast with Taylor; the casting of sour-faced Sherwood is another sign of how broad the joke has been made.
