A charming and delightful animated fable, set in early 1980s New York City. The movie has a melancholy streak a mile wide, and I would call it a European sensibility, Director Pablo Berger is Spanish, and it's important to understand that this movie is very Euro, even if it's very authentically set on the Lower East Side. I found myself wondering "Where is this movie taking me? How can they land this plane without breaking anything?" That can be distracting; I was kept on my toes for most of the 102 minutes. My kids loved it. I have heard that some kids found it to be too sad. (Special Sneak Preview ahead of the Oscars, where it was up for Best Animated Feature, screened at the Triplex)
