171 Hot Takes In Summer

  1. Kool and The Gang: "Hollywood Swinging"
  2. Reel Big Fish: "Take On Me". A colleague shared this cover with me. Amazing how this band can just crank their performance all the way over the top!
  3. Paul and Linda McCartney: "Monkberry Moon Delight". I am not proud of the gaps in my McCartney fandom. I found this song thanks to a website that conducted a poll of the all-time best ex-Beatles solo songs; "Monkberry" came in 90th.
  4. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals: "Easy Plateau"
  5. The Rolling Stones: "Street Fighting Man". I used to dismiss this song as a lesser early-60s single, but Dave Marsh's book Heart of Rock and Soul made me reappraise it.
  6. R.E.M.: "Gardening At Night" [live]. I've been on a R.E.M. kick lately thanks to the podcast RU Talkin R.E.M. RE: Me?
  7. Badfinger: "Baby Blue". I heard this on the soundtrack of the Scorsese film The Departed.
  8. The War On Drugs: "Holding On"
  9. Tina Turner: "Better Be Good To Me". Another rediscovery thanks to Dave Marsh's book.
  10. Madonna: "Live To Tell". I always loved this song, but Dave Marsh had the guts to rank it in his all-time list, just 4 years after it came out.
  11. Death Cab for Cutie: "Little Bribes". A cute song about gambling in Vegas.
  12. Elvis Costello: "Less Than Zero". Also ranked in Dave Marsh's book.
  13. Weezer: "Rosanna". I am very fond of both this song and "Africa", but this Toto song is better.
  14. The B-52's: "Wig". I remember playing this song on the radio in high school or college; it's been 25 years since I last heard it. Thanks Spotify!
  15. Violent Femmes: "Gone Daddy Gone"
  16. Albert Hammond Jr.: "Far Away Truths"
  17. Frank Turner: "Blackout"
  18. Aretha Franklin: "Chain of Fools". Maybe Aretha's most "rock" single?
  19. Buffalo Tom: "All Be Gone". Nice to hear Buffalo Tom are growing older just like me.
  20. The Spencer Davis Group: "New Jersey Turnpike" Random instrumental I stumbled across on Spotify with a relatable title.
